Where Is Dracula's Castle? The Direct Answer

Dracula's Castle is Bran Castle, in the village of Bran in Transylvania, Romania, 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Brasov on road DN73. That is the short answer to where is Dracula's Castle, and it is the name the castle itself uses in marketing to foreign visitors. But the full answer has two parts. Bran Castle never belonged to Count Dracula, because Count Dracula never existed outside Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. And Vlad the Impaler, the real prince behind the legend, had no significant role at Bran. His own fortress was Poenari, a ruin in Arges County, and he was probably born in Sighisoara. This guide separates the marketing from the history, gives the real distances, and shows which trips in our catalog of Dracula Castle tours reach each place.

Quick answer Bran Castle in Transylvania, 25 km from Brasov, plus the real Vlad sites

The castle sold as Dracula's Castle is Bran Castle, in Bran, Transylvania, 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Brasov and about 160 km (99 mi) from Bucharest. The name comes from marketing, not history. Bram Stoker never described Bran in his novel, and there is no evidence he knew of it. Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure behind the Dracula name, had no significant role at Bran, though he passed through the Bran Gorge nearby. His real fortress was Poenari, and his reputed grave is at Snagov Monastery.

Where Bran Castle actually is

Bran Castle stands in the village of Bran, in Transylvania, on the old border between Transylvania and Wallachia. It sits at 760 m (2,500 ft) above sea level, beside the mountain pass it once guarded as a customs post. The Brasov Saxons built the stone castle after a privilege from Louis I of Hungary dated November 19, 1377.

The map logic is simple. Bran lies on road DN73 between Brasov and Campulung, at the point where the Carpathians narrow into a gorge. From Brasov it is 30 km (19 mi), about 35 minutes by car.

From Bucharest it is 160 km (99 mi), about 2.5 hours by car. Sibiu is about 140 km (87 mi) from Brasov. There is no railway to Bran, so you arrive by car, bus or tour.

Why it is called Dracula's Castle

Bran Castle is marketed abroad as Dracula's Castle, the home of the count in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. That is the whole reason most visitors come. The castle's own promotional material leans into it, especially around Halloween.

The history is different. There is no evidence that Stoker ever knew about Bran, and his crumbling fictional castle in the Borgo Pass bears no resemblance to it. Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian voivode whose byname Draculea resembles Dracula, does not seem to have had a significant role in the fortress's history.

He did pass several times through the Bran Gorge below it. Bran spent its real life as a border customs post, and after 1920 as a royal residence, the favourite home of Queen Marie of Romania. Today it is a museum of the art and furniture she collected, reopened in 2009 as the first private museum in Romania, owned by her descendants.

For the castle's history, see the Bran Castle article on Wikipedia, and for Vlad's own fortress the Poenari Castle article.

What Stoker actually wrote

In the novel, Dracula's castle stands in the Borgo Pass in north-eastern Transylvania, a fictional location Stoker placed far from Bran. He described a ruined, trackless stronghold in a barren landscape. Bran Castle is a lived-in, well-preserved fortress with a courtyard, a well and a royal tea house at its foot.

The two have almost nothing in common.

Stoker never travelled to Transylvania. He built his castle from travel books and imagination, which is why no real fortress matches his description. The link between Bran and the novel was made later, by tourism, not by literature.

The real Vlad sites, at a glance

Vlad the Impaler left a trail across Romania that has nothing to do with Bran's marketing. The table compares the places tied to him, what the link actually is, how strong the evidence is, and which of the trips compared here reaches each one.

Bran Castle and the Bran Gorge

Bran is the honest heart of the Dracula trip. The castle is a museum, not a movie set, and the Dracula link is a name on the ticket. Inside you climb narrow staircases, including one hidden staircase between floors, pass through small rooms and a courtyard with a well, and can add the Torture Rooms and the Time Tunnel exhibits.

Queen Marie's Tea House restaurant sits at the foot of the castle in the Royal Park and needs no ticket.

The castle's real connection to the legend is geography. Vlad the Impaler passed several times through the Bran Gorge, the mountain pass the castle watched. So when you stand on the terraces, you are standing where the real prince actually travelled, even if he never ruled from these rooms.

If you are coming from the capital, the Three Castles Day Trip from Bucharest: Bran, Peles and Cantacuzino with Brasov adds Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni to the day, used as the Nevermore Academy in the Netflix series Wednesday.

Poenari, the fortress Vlad actually built

Poenari Fortress stands on Mount Cetatea above the Arges valley, at Arefu in Arges County, near the south end of the Transfagarasan road. Around 1459 Vlad the Impaler repaired and consolidated it, making it one of his main fortresses. It was abandoned in the 16th century and ruined by the 17th.

A landslide in 1913 brought down part of it.

You reach it by 1,480 concrete steps through the forest, about 30 to 45 minutes at a normal pace. It reopened after three years of conservation works worth over 25 million lei. Tickets cost 30 lei ($6.31) for adults and 20 lei ($4.21) for pupils, students and pensioners, open daily 10:00 to 18:00 with the last group entry at 17:00.

None of the trips compared here goes to Poenari. It is about 4 hours by road from Bucharest, and the Transfagarasan is usually open only in summer. Our Poenari Castle guide covers the visit in detail.

Sighisoara, Snagov and the rest of the Vlad trail

Sighisoara

A medieval citadel town with a famous Clock Tower. The house where Vlad Dracul lived, and where Vlad the Impaler was born, stands near the tower. The Dracula's Castle and Birthplace Tour: Bran and Sighisoara from Cluj-Napoca is the only listing here that reaches it, with a 2-hour guided visit and a shot of Romanian plum brandy, then Bran in the afternoon with the castle ticket included.

Snagov Monastery

A 15th-century Orthodox monastery on an island in Lake Snagov, 45 km from Bucharest, reached by a short boat crossing. Beneath its altar lies what many believe is the grave of Vlad III. The burial place is not proven.

The Dracula's Tomb at Snagov Monastery and Slanic Salt Mine Day Trip from Bucharest covers it in a six-hour half day that pairs well with a Bran trip on another day.

Rasnov and the bears

Between Brasov and Bran sits Rasnov Fortress, a 13th-century hilltop citadel. The fortress interior is closed for works, but the garden and the Bathory Tower can be visited with a 10 lei ($2.10) ticket, card only. Near Bran, the Libearty Bear Sanctuary at Zarnesti houses rescued brown bears, and no children under 5 may enter.

Where the catalog tours go

This site is a catalog, not an operator. We read the listings, the castle's official information and traveller reviews, and compare them. Every departure but the Snagov half day reaches Bran.

The differences are where you start, what else you see and how the day is run.

Planning a Dracula Trip Around These Places

The places linked to Dracula are spread across three regions of Romania, so the trip you book decides which of them you see. The table groups them by the nearest base city and the easiest way to reach each one, using the distances from the castle's official site and the listings compared here.

If you only have one day

Make it Bran. It is the place the name belongs to in every guidebook and on every road sign, it is open every day of the year, and the day trips from Bucharest and Brasov reach it with Peles or Rasnov on the same ticket. Add Sighisoara only if you start in Cluj-Napoca, and keep Poenari for a trip with a car and a free summer day.

Finding the best value among the listings

The trips compared here differ mainly in group size and what is bundled. The Bucharest coach days are cheapest but add castle entry on top. The Brasov small-group departure costs more for a real guide and a van of seven at most, with entry fees of about $58.69 per person extra.

The Cluj day is the only one that includes the Bran Castle ticket. From Brasov, the Bran Castle, Bear Sanctuary and Rasnov Citadel Tour from Brasov is the shortest day in the catalog at six hours, shown at $55 against $61. From Sibiu, the Dracula's Castle Day Tour and Guided Brasov Walk from Sibiu runs four days a week, about 140 km (87 miles) each way, with three self-guided hours at Bran for the castle and lunch.

Compare our picks for the best Dracula Castle tours to see which listing matches your budget and starting city. Bran Castle admission itself is 100 lei ($21.04) for adults, 40 lei ($8.42) for children 5 to 17, 60 lei ($12.62) for students and 70 lei ($14.73) for seniors 65 and over.

Questions and Answers

Is there really a Dracula castle in Transylvania?

There is a castle marketed as Dracula's Castle, and it is Bran Castle in Bran, Transylvania. But Count Dracula is a fictional character from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, and Stoker never described Bran. The name is tourism, not history.

Where is Vlad Dracula's castle?

Vlad the Impaler's own fortress was Poenari Castle, a ruin above the Arges valley in Arges County, which he rebuilt around 1459. It is reached by 1,480 steps. None of the catalog trips goes there. Bran Castle, marketed as Dracula's Castle, had no significant role in his story.

Where is Dracula's country?

The novel places Dracula in Transylvania, a real region of central Romania, and Bran Castle there carries his name today. The historical Vlad the Impaler ruled Wallachia, the region south of the Carpathians, and was born in Sighisoara in Transylvania.

Can you visit Dracula's castle?

Yes. Bran Castle is open every day of the year, with adult tickets at 100 lei ($21.04) and a last entry that runs at 19:00 from April 1 to November 1. Tickets often sell out well in advance in summer, so booking ahead is wise. Details in our Bran Castle tickets guide.

Is Bran Castle the real Dracula's castle?

It is the real castle sold under that name, but not a castle Stoker described or that Vlad the Impaler ruled. There is no evidence Stoker knew of Bran, and Vlad had no significant role in its history, though he passed through the Bran Gorge nearby. Visit it as a beautiful medieval museum with a great story, not as the count's home.

Where was Vlad the Impaler buried?

Many believe he lies beneath the altar of Snagov Monastery, on an island in Lake Snagov 45 km from Bucharest. The burial place is not proven. The Dracula's Tomb at Snagov Monastery and Slanic Salt Mine Day Trip from Bucharest reaches the monastery by boat crossing.
